Dan Vapid & the Cheats, Heat Tape, Eastland Disaster, About the Mess

When: Fri., Jan. 13, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $10
It's not as though Dan Vapid (or any of the other many alumni of the great Screeching Weasel) usually waits for a good reason to start a new pop-punk band—between them, he and the rest of the Weasel formers have been in more incestuous lineups than they've got Ramones buttons on their leather jackets. But after Ben Weasel got ruff 'n' tuff at last year's SXSW, apparently losing his damn mind for a moment and punching a pair of females in an altercation during a show, Vapid quit Screeching Weasel—and that was all the impetus he needed to launch this project. Dan Vapid & the Cheats are the latest entry on the seasoned pop-punk specialist's impressive resumé, which also includes the Riverdales, the Methadones, the Mopes, Noise by Numbers, and even the Queers. The Cheats don't have any recordings out yet, but this fall I watched 'em open for 7 Seconds during Riot Fest, and they bobbed their way through about a thousand concise, hook-loaded power-chord jams—some of them Vapid classics and some of them sure to show up on the band's forthcoming debut, due early this year. —Kevin Warwick The Heat Tape, Eastland Disaster, and About the Mess open.
