Re: “No Confidence at NEIU

I think Neiu’s recently updated strategic plan explains much of what is under way if one reads between the lines. (http://strategicplan.neiu.edu/)

Public funding is dwindling - taxing wealth is so not on the table in our business owned political system – so catering to corporations and private wealth for support is the plan; privatize and maximize income from existing university assets is their method. Even the student run radio station (WZRD) has been harassed and demoralized with demands that it raise money to remodel the offices of the Student Activities Director and staff.

Increasing production (graduates/five years) is a part of the new vision at NEIU; train students to the needs of corporate supporters and get them into the labor pool before the job is either outsourced or automated out of existence. Developing programs that support corporate profit margins is the goal of the neo-liberal program embedded in the strategic plan, not defending the public commons of civil society.

The U.S. ruling elites want working class children trained in obedience and inoculated with the moral deadness induced by nationalism and the American Business Model. Humanities and History studies can give raise to questions about militarism and Empire's incompatibility with a democratic society and healthy civil institutions.

“Learn in the City, Lead in the World” is the new NEIU marketing logo. The Hahs administration channels the unstated meaning. “ Learn obedience ..., Lead a platoon ...”. When Global War is the major growth industry in the United States, President Hahs' demand that professors function more like drill instructors could make a lot of cents.
