When: Thu., Feb. 21, 10 p.m. 2013

Young Canadian producer Ryan Hemsworth makes mood music for hip-hop fans. He works edited bits of rapping (sometimes pitch-shifted, played backward, or treated with echo) into his serene beats, but there’s never an MC dropping verses on top of them. There aren’t even lead vocals to speak of, just snippets of syrupy singing that Hemsworth uses for hooks. Gently stuttering drum patterns drive looped samples of guitars playing wistful chord progressions, backward piano melodies, and maybe a faint hum of distortion—these tracks are like the mellow yin to trap music’s aggressive yang, and they’d be great for a chill-out room in an after-hours club that specializes in trunk-rattling rap. The songs on Hemsworth’s 2012 EP Last Words (We Did It) would make great backdrops for MCs (he’s already collaborated with the likes of Deniro Farrar and Kitty, formerly Kitty Pryde), but highlights such as “Colour & Movement” and “Overthinking” don’t suffer from their absence—listening to them feels like stumbling upon a dusty box filled with faded photos of long-lost loved ones. —Leor Galil Daedelus headlines; Ryan Hemsworth and Samo Sound Boy open.
