Drama, Romance
Dismissed by critics but embraced by African-American audiences, Tyler Perry now opens his pictures without press previews, but on the basis of this expert melodrama he might want to reconsider. Subtlety is not his strong suit—all the characters here are either adorable or loathsome—yet Perry has toned down the pandering materialism, evangelism, and black empowerment of Madea's Family Reunion and Diary of a Mad Black Woman, letting his heart-tugging story tell itself. Idris Elba (The Wire) stars as a divorced father in Atlanta trying to regain custody of his three daughters from their nihilistic mother (Tasha Smith), and Gabrielle Union gets her best role in years as the high-powered attorney who agrees to take his case.
