If you've been wondering what would happen when the mumblecore filmmakers matriculated into the commercial mainstream, wonder no more: this Fox Searchlight comedy by brothers Jay and Mark Duplass (Baghead, The Puffy Chair) gains immeasurably from its talented big-name actors but preserves the brothers' unadorned storytelling and assured characterization. A divorced sad sack (John C. Reilly) falls head over heels for a vivacious single mother (Marisa Tomei); they're great for each other, but their romance is consistently undermined by the sneaky oedipal machinations of her possessive 21-year-old son, Cyrus. As the furiously passive-aggressive title character, Jonah Hill delivers a craftier comic performance than anything in his box-office hits (Superbad, Get Him to the Greek), but what really elevates the story above its shticky premise is the combined neuroses of all three characters; like any family unit, they're just trying to navigate each other's hang-ups well enough to be happy. With Catherine Keener and the perpetually underused Matt Walsh.
