To the editors:

Harold Henderson questioned our "working definition" of culture in The Ounce of Prevention Fund Magazine, Spring 1987, in connection with our reference to one McDonald's in 2,003 square miles around Cairo, Illinois [City File, May 29].

Actually, we were using an "operational definition," which is "what you settle for to escape boredom when you don't have the CSO, the MCA, the Kirov ballet, Laurie Anderson--or even viaduct graffiti."

A few hundred years from now, archaeologists probably will put the arch-adorned McDonald's bag right next to Claes Oldenburg's burger sculpture when they study the culture of the 20th century.
