Gavin Russom was an important behind-the-scenes guy during much of James Murphy’s decade-spanning mission to resurrect and modernize the sounds and techniques of predigital electronic dance music—he built some of Murphy’s synths, played them in LCD Soundsystem, and recorded an eccentric disco single for DFA under the name Black Leotard Front. His current group, a collaboration with multimedia artist Viva Ruiz called the Crystal Ark, can reach as many as nine members depending on the venue; it’s often mentioned alongside other big-band live-disco acts from New York, including Escort and Midnight Magic, but Russom and company stray much further from the form’s established borders than their contemporaries. Their self-titled full-length, released last year on DFA, steers disco’s 4/4 thump into mystical psychedelia flecked with Krautrock, salsa, acid house, pop reggae, and other peculiar sounds that shouldn’t fit together nearly as well as they do. The album is trippy as hell, and I’ve heard that the live Crystal Ark experience can be life altering. —Miles Raymer The Crystal Ark headlines; Gemini Club, Shuteye, and Echodroids open.
