Cruzar la Cara de la Luna | Lyric Opera House | Classical | Chicago Reader
This is a past event.
When: Sun., April 7, 3:30 p.m. 2013
A few years ago, when Lyric Opera general director Anthony Freud was still heading up the Houston Grand Opera, he commissioned something nobody had heard of before: a mariachi opera. Jose “Pepe” Martinez, music director of the renowned Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan, was enlisted to compose. He teamed up with Broadway writer-director Leonard Foglia on story and lyrics, and Cruzar la Cara de la Luna (“To Cross the Face of the Moon”) premiered at the Houston opera in 2010. Performed in Spanish and English (with projected translations) and encompassing nearly all of mariachi’s broad range, it addresses the meaning of “home” with the story of a Texas family who discover a startling secret when the ashes of their patriarch are returned to his Mexican birthplace. The original cast will be joined by Martinez and Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan for a single already sold-out performance this afternoon. However, you can catch the opera with the same cast and the University of Texas Pan-American’s hot Mariachi Aztlan at Benito Juarez Community Academy in Pilsen on Fri 4/19 at 7:30 PM and Sat 4/20 at 2 and 7:30 PM; those shows cost just $5. The final performance is at the Genesee Theatre in Waukegan on Sun 4/21 at 7:30 PM; tickets are $5-$18. —Deanna Isaacs
