Our Review

Never particularly inspired to begin with, the cupcake craze now lurches in a sort of death spiral. Certain entrepreneurs have come to a late-capitalist realization: products resembling the rough shape, coloring, and (high) price point of a "cupcake" can quite easily be sold as such, gastronomic and/or aesthetic considerations notwithstanding. Frosting at this first Chicago location of the Manhattan chain--where cupcakes are $3.75 a pop--resembles something laid on with a trowel, crudely domed on top and sloppy around the edges, its sludgy texture courtesy of jaw-disintegrating amounts of sugar. A caramel-apple cupcake had all the subtlety of a spice-scented candle; the caramel-flavored frosting on a tiramisu cupcake was redolent of chemical additives. Coffee’s not bad, and service is sweet, but you’re here for a sugar fix, right? Better to consider, say, Dunkin' Donuts.
