Salsa star Ruben Blades is an appealing, open presence in his film debut, and director Leon Ichaso (El Super) provides a warm, illuminating view of New York's Hispanic neighborhoods. That should have been enough for a movie, but the filmmakers haven't trusted their talents; they've laid on a trite, moralizing plot line—young musician gets a break, turns his back on his friends, and eventually gets his comeuppance—that seemed pretty tuckered out when Elvis did it in Loving You. Nothing connected with the narrative is remotely convincing, but the music and the milieu are the real thing.
