A later work by the pioneering female director Dorothy Arzner, this 1936 drama stars Rosalind Russell as a steely upper-class woman who married so she could be “independent of everybody” and who quietly controls her affable husband (John Boles). It's the second adaptation of a Pulitzer-winning play by George Kelly, and though it ends with a weak embrace of conventional morality, Arzner seems more sympathetic to Russell's formidable will in the early reels. Among the crack supporting players are Thomas Mitchell, Billie Burke, and Jane Darwell. 75 min.
