Justin Vallesteros draws maps with the music he makes as Craft Spells. The west-coast songwriter plays gentle guitar and synth tunes that take up plenty of space, but the terrain he explores isn’t as literal as Real Estate’s grassy suburbs. Instead, the borders of his mental geography are shaped by anxiety attacks and Internet-fueled restlessness. On his sophomore album, Nausea (Captured Tracks)—which he wrote after a bout of severe writer’s block—Vallesteros muses about an imaginary city he dreams of, practically on cue, three times a week. Due to his busy touring schedule, Vallesteros visits the place even more than his physical home. Nausea takes on darker, meaner hues than Craft Spells’ debut, Idle Labor, but Vallesteros’s more frightening dreams make for just as fascinating an escape from the mundane. —Sasha Geffen
