John Brennan is a convicted murderer, keeping busy in prison by filing appeals and publishing a crusading newsletter called the Death Row Advocate. His new neighbor in the next cell is Bobby Reyburn, a redneck moron whose white supremacist ideology led him to set a fire that killed 37 black men, women, and children as they worshipped in church. John despises Bobby at first. But then he gets to understand and pity him, demonstrating that even monsters are, um, human. Playwright Bruce Graham set himself an interesting challenge in using the irredeemable and unrepentant Bobby as his starting point for an argument against capital punishment. That argument doesn't translate into drama, though: the play's trajectory is obvious early on, and nothing—either in the writing or in Mikey Laird's weak staging for Emergent Theatre—intervenes to make it any less so as things wear on. —Tony Adler
