Coup de Grace

A 1976 film by Volker Schlondorff, set in the immediate aftermath of World War I. A former German officer tries to renew a childhood romance with a fallen aristocratic woman. She is now a Bolshevik, which occasions Schlondorff's usual long ideological harangues at the expense of dramatic development. I don't doubt his good intentions, but I have always found him impossible to watch.
