During the 2008 presidential campaign, former U.S. senator Phil Gramm said the country was in the throes of a "mental recession." The comment was considered a major gaffe at the time, but in a way he had a point: Aren't all recessions—and for that matter, all booms—mental to some degree? Written by Dog & Pony Theatre Company member Aaron Weissman, this "vaudeville extravaganza" showcases characters—including a verse-speaking Ben Franklin, a money-printing Confederate ventriloquist, and a drag-king-and-queen duo—who abuse our collective psychological belief in money. As directed by Krissy Vanderwarker and Jenn BeVard, Weissman's kinetic cabaret offers a rowdy good time—but it's too loose, and sometimes too smug, to contain much hard truth. —Dan Jakes
