Costs of a Free Market

Dear editor,

Reader Richard B. Katz's letter to the editor, published May 15, brief though it is, is unfortunately just a repetition of an uncritical glorification of the "free market" system of real estate ["Will Development Bury the Barrio?," April 24]. While acknowledging that there may be flaws in our economic system, it assumes that what drives all people to leave their homelands is a desire for riches, rather than the impossibility for them to sustain even a meager existence in their country of origin.

What would be more useful than unfounded cheerleading would be an explanation of how--in a "free market" economy necessarily motivated by profit rather than ethics--safe, clean, affordable housing would be available to people who could not pay the premium that such conditions in this city draw.
