A quite genial blend of suburban social observation and caper comedy that, sadly, never finds its focus. Cliff Gorman and Joseph Bologna are fine as the two New York cops who plot a sensational securities rip-off in order to get out from under the stifling security blanket of mortgage payments, 7 AM traffic jams, and nauseating backyard barbecues; but director Aram Avakian seems always to be looking the other way. Thriller writer Donald Westlake, adapting his own novel, raises some familiar issues, but they are simply pretexts, not probes. Michel Legrand's score is better than usual (1973).
