An improvised soap opera sounds like a terrible idea. Inventing on the fly an elaborate plot that twists and turns yet remains semicoherent is no easy task. But that’s precisely the objective set by Theatre Momentum in this serialized improv show about a family of wealthy schemers living in a sleepy small town. Cast members play the same characters at each performance during the run, picking up the story where they left off. At the show I saw, the players supplied plenty of soapy intrigue—a kidnapping, shady financial dealings, questions of paternity—but the plot holes and glaring inconsistencies grew distracting and increasingly confounding. Still, it’s a unique and daring experiment, and it’s fun to watch the cast try to pull it off. —Zac Thompson
