Some artists play at being sociopaths, but video maker Joe Gibbons is the real deal. In Confessions of a Sociopath, Part 1 old footage shows him shooting heroin, shoplifting books, and flirting with suicide as he walks on the ledges of buildings. He's been diagnosed with “negative identity” and “narcissistic personality disorder,” both of which seem plausible. (“I'm Joe Gibbons,” he explains. “I don't need a job.”) But the video's fragmentation is affecting in itself, a halting attempt to make sense of his life. Doppelganger opens with an image of a hand wiping frost off a window, looking for a world outside the self. 85 min.
