It's 1884, and a cantankerous Italian photographer named Adolfo Farsari has set up shop in the Japanese port city of Yokohama. It's also modern-day Tokyo, where a high-strung professor has embarked on a quest to buy photographic prints from the very period in which Farsari was active. Naomi Iizuka's 2010 play alternates between the two plots, her curious (and frustrating) gimmick being they never quite connect. The result is a fistful of loose ends. As directed by Lisa Portes, this visually crisp production boasts flawless design and a mostly flawless cast. Michael McKeogh stumbles in the keystone roles, though: dual-cast as the professor and Farsari, he proves his subtle talents in the former but struggles to find the right tone in the latter. —Keith Griffith
