A political romance based a little too clearly on the Lubitsch-Garbo Ninotchka: Clark Gable is an American reporter in Moscow who falls in love with a Stalinist screetcar conductor improbably incarnated by Hedy Lamarr. King Vidor directed from a Ben Hecht-Charles Lederer screenplay; he's clearly out of his element with the more bumptious farce material, but his direction of Lamarr was enough to attract the attention of one unlikely fan—Joseph Cornell, who devoted an ecstatic essay to Lamarr's “storm-swept beauty, fearful to behold.” With Felix Bressart, Eve Arden, Oscar Homolka, and Sig Ruman.
