Comedy Combo Open Mic | Annoyance Theatre | Stand-Up, Improv/Sketch | Chicago Reader
This is a past event.
When: Saturdays. Continues through April 18 2015
“Open mike night” doesn’t always carry the best connotations, but at the Annoyance it’s a mostly lively hour divided into improv and stand-up. At the performance I attended, the players were a healthy mix of newbies and Annoyance regulars. How it works: the improvisers have 25 minutes onstage together, followed by the stand-ups, who have five minutes each. The improv half, based on the suggestion of "conch shell" that night, had settings from a pig roast to a pawnshop, and participants interacted with impressive ease and timing given their unfamiliarity with each other. The Annoyance’s Lilly Allison, the evening’s host, shone during her stand-up set, comparing OCD to having the Cranberries' "Zombie" stuck in your head and poking fun at her Polish heritage. Others were less prepared, referring back to iPhones or notes for help remembering jokes. —Marissa Oberlander
