Columbus, Indiana, is known for its modernist architecture, and Kogonada, who directed this indie drama, won't let you forget it for an instant. His routine family story, about a bitter young Korean man (John Cho) who arrives in town to care for his comatose father, unfolds in a series of grandly composed frames that range from fanatically symmetrical interior shots to boldly geometric exterior shots showcasing the local gems. The father is a revered architecture professor, and the resentful son strikes up a cigarette-smoking friendship with a warm young woman (Haley Lu Richardson) who gives architecture tours, so she can show him all the best buildings while he opens up about his icy dad and she ponders whether to desert her newly clean-and-sober mom and pursue a college scholarship out east. Theirs is a story of two lives intersecting—presumably at a 90-degree angle. With Parker Posey.
