Especially timely in light of the current heightened awareness of gun violence, this newly updated version of an eight-year-old work by Stephen Karam and American Theater Company artistic director PJ Paparelli uses documentary materials to recount the 1999 Columbine High School massacre. Choral speech, ritualized movement, expressionistic lighting, multimedia elements, music, and crisp performances are combined to often powerful effect. But Paparelli's staging here isn't nearly as compelling as the play's 2008 Chicago premiere at Raven Theatre was, and his revisions to the script—incorporating recent interviews with survivors—feel anticlimactic. Nonetheless, Columbine is an important story that commands attention. —Albert Williams
