Anyone who's ever belted out a show tune while filling in a Federal Student Aid form can tell you that anxiety over academic expenses can lead to odd behavior. New England Music & Stage Company picks up on that aspect of the collegiate application process in this new musical about a high school senior whose dreams of getting into a good theater program send her into the clutches of a pitchy student-loan lender. She and her fellow applicants use up at least a dozen middling songs worrying about getting into college, paying for college, and whether it's wiser to study economics or creative writing. Highlights include an admissions office worker weighed down by the numbers game, a rich girl who gets in with an essay on her desire to major in extraterrestrialism, and Aasia Bullock, showing off the best voice in the ensemble as a poetry major-turned-barista. —Hannah Gold
