Other documentaries—Crude Impact, The End of Suburbia—have assessed the "peak oil" theory, that worldwide oil production since the mid-19th century has followed a bell curve and now we're on the downside of it. But nothing I've seen or read spells out the chilling implications of the idea like this talking-head documentary on Michael Ruppert, the controversial Los Angeles writer whose newsletter (and later Web site) From the Wilderness has promoted various conspiracy theories. Filmmaker Chris Smith (American Movie, The Yes Men) dances away from the issue of whether Ruppert is credible as a journalist, but as a futurist, lucidly explaining how the exploding population and dwindling oil supply will collide in the next century, Ruppert makes a compelling argument that the world is approaching a paradigm shift unlike anything in human history. 82 min.
