Now in its third incarnation at Dream Theatre, this one-act is unmistakably formulaic: Two complementary misfits, pathological introvert Nate and pathological extrovert Lyric, have a chance encounter on the sidewalk the day before Christmas. Neither has ever had a meaningful relationship; their attempt to forge one is full of sweet fumblings and traumatizing confessions. But Jeremy Menekseoglu’s carefully observed script puts real sinew on a predictable plot, turning familiar romantic tropes into something genuinely poignant—and occasionally harrowing. Menekseoglu’s a likably pathetic Nate in director Laura Gouin’s bare-bones production, but Nicole Roberts tears the stuffing out of Lyric, so nuanced, mercurial, and meticulous she’s positively mesmerizing—a particularly impressive feat considering she played to a nearly empty house on opening night. —Justin Hayford
