Cold Creek Manor

Sick of Manhattan, a handsome couple (Dennis Quaid and Sharon Stone) pick up a foreclosure property in a small town and move in with their two children, but the elegant house begins to seem less of a bargain after the malevolent former owner (a marvelously snaky Stephen Dorff) gets out of prison and starts harassing them. Director Mike Figgis, best known for the soporific Leaving Las Vegas, hasn't a clue on how to pace something like this: it takes forever to get moving, but when it finally does, the Quaid and Stone characters still seem ill defined. The best scenes come near the middle, when Dorff (like the Robert De Niro character in Cape Fear, this movie's obvious template) cagily drags the grumpy Quaid off his moral high horse. With Juliette Lewis. 118 min.
