Cold Cave, Boyd Rive, DJ Philly Peroxide

When: Mon., June 24, 9 p.m. 2013
Wesley Eisold fronted seminal early-aughts hardcore band American Nightmare—who just rolled through town on a short reunion tour—but he’s always been much more than a sweaty and red-faced screaming romantic. As one-man darkwave outfit Cold Cave, Eisold is still hardcore—he and his live band played in leather jackets in 95-degree Pitchfork heat—but he sings with a slyness in his drawling vocals that’s a lot cooler and more dapper than just barking into a mike. He’s also something of a solitary auteur: since the morose and blaring dance-floor glitz of 2011’s Cherish the Light Years, he’s recorded most of his music alone (as he’s noted, not being under contract gives him the freedom to work as slow as he’d like). His most recent release, the seven-inch EP Black Boots (Heartworm), is much more pared down than anything on Cherish—it’s built less on driving rhythms and erratic melodies and more on his echoing, drugged-out vocals—but Eisold seems happiest right now setting his own pace. —Kevin Warwick Boyd Rice and DJ Philly Peroxide open.
