Drama, Romance
Made with the support of Karl Lagerfeld, head of the Chanel firm, this visually seductive but emotionally cool French biopic offers authentic period detail as it imaginatively reconstructs the relationship between two giants of modernism. Chanel model Anna Mouglalis plays the groundbreaking fashion designer Coco Chanel as singularly focused and self-contained; her calculated patronage of struggling composer Igor Stravinsky (Mads Mikkelsen, too robust for the role) is more believable than their torrid affair in the early 1920s, after he moves into her country villa with his wife and children. Most of the story unfolds in that splendid isolation; the film would have been more satisfying if director Jan Kounen (Darshan: The Embrace) had shown more of the ferment of the times. In French with subtitles.
