Cloud Control, Mister Suit Early Warnings (Music) Recommended Soundboard

When: Tue., Jan. 14, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: $10, $8 in advance
In an early press release, Cloud Control vocalist Heidi Lenffer wrote that the four members of this psych-tinged Australian pop-rock group had met during rehearsals of an amateur production of The Pirates of Penzance, but it’s not clear why she thought anybody would fall for that tall tale—it’s not as though band’s accessible, shape-shifting songs sound like Gilbert and Sullivan. Cloud Control’s 2013 album, Dream Cave (TurnOut), jumps around like a jukebox filled with pop hits dating back to the 50s that’s playing on shuffle. “Scar,” for instance, is a pitch-perfect homage to the early-90s Madchester scene’s rave-friendly rock (the bongo-and-piano breakdown could’ve been written by the Happy Mondays), and the very next track, “Happy Birthday,” is wistful 70s-style FM-radio folk that would make a great companion to America’s “A Horse With No Name.” —Leor Galil Mister Suit opens.
