With his first full-length play, Jake Perry hits the ground running. He turns a potentially stale setup--estranged exes and their volatile friend reunite in a remote cabin to pick at old wounds--into two hours of carefully observed, hysterics-free, intermittently harrowing emotional warfare. Unlike most new playwrights, Perry understands he's not writing for television; his patient first act is an uninterrupted hour-long scene. Best of all, he avoids schematic characterizations and predictable plotting in favor of resonant irresolution, which Errol McClendon's cast handle deftly. Once Perry trims the fat and finds a way to maintain the stakes without having characters point guns at one another, he'll have a hell of a play. --Justin Hayford
