Yeah, I know: the only Adam Sandler movie you like is Punch-Drunk Love, and that one doesn't count. But this comic fantasy is the best vehicle he's ever had, a high-concept goof that gradually darkens into an emotional nightmare reminiscent of Capra. Sandler plays an overworked family man who stops in at a Bed Bath & Beyond looking for a universal remote control and in the “Beyond” section meets a strange inventor (Christopher Walken) who gives him a remote control for the universe. Screenwriters Steve Koren and Mark O'Keefe mine this gag for everything it's worth, spoofing our modern mania for electronic convenience, yet their real achievement is turning the star's usual “family first” message into a statement of genuine conviction. Frank Coraci (The Wedding Singer) directed; with Kate Beckinsale, David Hasselhoff, Henry Winkler, Julie Kavner, and Sean Astin. PG-13, 98 min.
