Action, Adventure, Fantasy
I don't know what Greek mythology ever did to Louis Letterier, the French action hack who made Transporter 2, but he's more than evened the score with this loud, soporific, CGI-sodden blockbuster. The demigod Perseus (Sam Worthington of Avatar) would lead a human revolt against the capricious Olympian gods; he wants to behead Medusa (who looks like a PlayStation escapee) and slay the Kraken, but without tapping into his divine powers, which understandably annoys his human allies (led by Mads Mikkelsen of Casino Royale). Like the 1981 original starring Laurence Olivier, this remake is interesting mainly for the chance to see top-flight acting talent labor over dialogue so leaden you could cast bullets from it. As Zeus, Liam Neeson tries to out-shout the Gerard Butler character in 300; as Hades, Ralph Fiennes evokes both Charles Dickens's Uriah Heep and John Travolta's alien warlord in Battlefield Earth.
