"It's clear to us that there are some less than sane things coming out of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue right now," says editor Jason Kucsma of his cohorts at Clamor, the award-winning bimonthly magazine he founded with longtime underground zinester Jen Angel in 1999. Advocating social awareness without sermonizing, Clamor was created, says Kucsma, to promote resistance to such insanity--"to make it possible for people to think there's a better way for us to be living right now." Sometimes, though, the best way to see clearly what's going on at home is to leave for a while. Hence the theme of the latest issue, "Beyond Tourism," which includes stories about a man in Indiana building a sailboat from scratch; a nonprofit community bike shop in Portland, Oregon; sacred monkeys in Pushkar; an American with European roots who's mistaken for a Chinese native while traveling to Xin Jiang; and a musing on identity inspired by the craze for skin lightening in the Philippines. On Friday, October 10, Kucsma will read from current and past issues in collaboration with a screening of shorts by Rooftop Films as part of the Autonomous Zone's ten-year anniversary party. It's from 6 PM until midnight at 2129 N. Milwaukee, 773-353-3705, suggested donation $7.
