Documentary
A fly-on-the-wall look at writer-statesman Vaclav Havel, the president of Czechoslovakia who oversaw its transformation into the Czech Republic in 1992. Directors Miroslav Janek and Pavel Koutecky shadow Havel as he formulates strategy with trusted advisers, deflects his opponents’ criticisms, acts as tour guide to the Rolling Stones (whose guitarist Ron Wood asks for restaurant recommendations), and hosts such foreign dignitaries as Mikhail Gorbachev, Margaret Thatcher, and Bill Clinton (so delighted with a gift of a gold saxophone that he performs an impromptu jazz number). His poise, erudition, humility, and grasp of detail are impressive, but what distinguishes him most is his grace under pressure (the death of his first wife, his bout with cancer, his ultimate defeat at the polls). In English and subtitled Czech.
Director: Miroslav Janek and Pavel Koutecký
