Circuit des Yeux, Spires That in the Sunset Rise

When: Tue., May 19, 9:30 p.m. 2015
Price: $12, $10 in advance
Active since 2001, Spires That in the Sunset Rise have become one of the midwest’s most fascinating bands even as they’ve stripped their lineup down—since about 2010 or so, it’s mostly been the core duo of Kathleen Baird and Taralie Peterson accompanied by various collaborators. The outfit’s distinctive sound emerged from a sort-of neofolk tradition that embraced minimalism and free improv, and they absolutely mastered the technique of using looping and effects to create fully fleshed-out otherworldly soundscapes that resemble a dozen people playing. Though each of their full-lengths takes several years to craft, Spires remain busy collaborators—they most recently premiered a “shadow opera” in Minneapolis called Down Below, or the Womb of Worlds, which is inspired by the work of surrealist painter and writer Leonora Carrington. For their seventh full-length, Beasts in the Garden (Alt.vinyl), multi-instrumentalists Baird and Peterson—who will try anything once—break out their high school instruments (saxophone and flute) and produce a glorious multifaceted journey, by turns alien and familiar, ancient and futuristic, and always beautiful. This is a shared release party with their friend and fellow traveler Circuit des Yeux (Haley Fohr), who is celebrating the release of her new full-length, In Plain Speech (Thrill Jockey). —Monica Kendrick
