Christmas With the Kranks

In any normal year this dire comedy would be the undisputed lump of coal in our psychic stocking, but coming on the heels of Surviving Christmas, it's a close second. Based on John Grisham's best-selling novella “Skipping Christmas,” Christmas With the Kranks stars Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis as a suburban couple who draw the ire of their friends, neighbors, and coworkers by choosing to forgo the holiday. Dan Aykroyd plays the belligerent neighbor who hires carolers to harass them and sends kids to chant at their door. Naturally there's a ham-handed moral at the end, but the menace of the first half seems more sincere. Lead-footed Chris Columbus wrote the script, and Joe Roth (America's Sweethearts) directed. PG, 99 min.
