If you hope to tie down the sound of Chris Forsyth’s guitar music, I hope you have plenty of rope. Once an occupant of the obscure margins of American music—where musicians dealing in instrumental, experimental guitar set up camp—Forsyth gained recognition in 2013 with the release of his solo album Solar Motel. Fast-forward through the formation of a touring band to help support that record, and voila, the guitarist sits alone on a weathered wooden stool in the corner of a musty, dim bar no longer. His new album with the Solar Motel Band, Intensity Ghost (No Quarter), is like a stone skipping in slow motion across guitar-focused subgenres—never cutting hard enough to create a gash, but smoothly gliding along in an undefined line, and into a luminous horizon. The five mammoth tracks, which can stretch upwards of 11 minutes in length, collectively create such breadth that Forsyth can noodle from classic-rock psychedelia (“The Ballad of Freer Hollow”) to cascading postrock (“I Ain’t Waiting”) to jagged postpunk (“Intensity Ghost”) without bothering to stamp a ticket. Plus the ambient guitar noise that spills out of the tracks pools over the course of the album and unifies them in a way that feels entirely organic. —Kevin Warwick
