Re: “More Cupcakes

Pass this place up. Lots of fancy and enticing flavors, but a mediocre cake at best. I recently tried the Grand Marnier. The icing had an intense (almost too strong) Marnier flavor. But the cake base was just plain ol' vanilla, and on the dry side to boot. No, I didn't expect the place to actually feature 50 different batters. But vanilla? That's a staple, and at a place this pricey it ought to be darn good. I wasted $5.25. Speaking of pricing, I don't get it here. My friend had the chocolate champagne, which was only $3.50 (and the chocolate cake was better than the vanilla, though not outstanding). There are lots of other cupcake shops that surpass this one; in fact, Goddess and Grocer halfway down the block does a better job--and for less $$ believe it or not.

Re: “Stax Cafe

I was really excited about this new place--another breakfast and lunch spot is always welcome. Sadly, I don't think I'll be returning. Lots of the menu items sounded appealing, so it was a tough decision to finally settle on the blueberry pancakes with blueberry lemon compote. I had hoped the topping would eliminate the need for extra syrup, but no luck: the pancakes were much too dry to be edible with just the tasty compote alone. I struck out with the side of chicken apple sausage as well. The two pieces were overcooked--I could barely slice the casing with my knife, and the inside was dried out. I sent it back and replaced it with bacon, which was surprisingly bland and slightly undercooked. My friend had the brisket hash, which he described as good but nothing special. His verdict: he might give Stax another try but he wouldn't rush back. It's a great looking space, but I can't think of a reason to go back at all--unless the reliable Sweet Maple Cafe a half-block away is too crowded.
