Ntshaveni wa Luruli, a South African who's worked with Spike Lee, directed this 1998 social comedy set in a bustling postapartheid Soweto. A messenger who cashed out after 25 years with the stock exchange, Sipho (Fats Bookholane) starts a business selling chickens. He's good-natured but also a conniver—cheating on his wife, haranguing his customers, and tricking his competitors. The script by Mutuzeli Matshobais is fairly simplistic and not without Capra-esque cliches, but its colorful dialogue, rambunctious spirit, and bawdy humor serve as a tribute to the resilience and ingenuity of urban blacks still mired in poverty and slighted by white society. 103 min.
