Chicken With Plums

Marjane Satrapi is best known for Persepolis (2007), the animated feature of her acclaimed graphic novel about growing up amid the Iranian Revolution. She and her directing partner on that project, Vincent Paronnaud, return with this live-action adaptation of her subsequent graphic novel, which tracks the last eight days in the life of a concert violinist in 1958 Tehran. Mathieu Amalric gives a popeyed performance as Nasser-Ali Khan, who despairs over the damage recently sustained by his beloved instrument and watches his marriage crumble as he pursues a long-lost love. The story lacks the historical sweep of Persepolis, and the live-action staging tends to accentuate the puckishness of Satrapi's work; this often plays like a bummed-out Amelie. With Maria de Medeiros and Chiara Mastroianni. In English and subtitled French.
