Chicago's Weird, Grandma | Neo-Futurarium | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader
This is a past event.
When: Mondays. Continues through Dec. 17 2012
Price: $6-$12
Barrel of Monkeys's signature show, That's Weird, Grandma, showcases the work of Chicago Public Schools kids at their creative best. Stories culled from grammar-school-level writing workshops are turned into absolutely hilarious sketches, peppered with just enough snarky sarcasm to keep the adults entertained. The twist this time around is that guests from a variety of local theater companies have been invited to participate, bringing everything from puppetry to experimental dance into the mix. On the night I attended, Steppenwolf Theatre ensemble member Ora Jones memorably performed three solo pieces written from the points of view of inanimate objects, all while wearing a giant onesie. "Dear Flag," she complained at one point, playing a put-upon globe of the world, "I hate the mornings. Everyone salutes you, and I'm only taken out for work." —Marissa Oberlander
