Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra

Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra

For the past several years, Grant Park has played host to the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, an outfit that in prestige and quality is just a notch or two below the Civic Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's training arm. (Ravinia, oddly enough, doesn't have such an alliance even though the North Shore has one of the highest concentrations of teenage instrumentalists in the country.) Despite constant turnover, the ensemble has been consistently reliable and remarkably flexible under the leadership of Daniel Hege. At age 30, Hege is emerging as a major talent, a poised and thoughtful maestro who can coax disciplined playing from upstart musicians. He's just been hired as the assistant conductor at the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. At this Grant Park concert he'll guide the CYSO in a challenging and unusual slate that highlights two estimable 20th-century American composers, David Diamond (Music for Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet) and Aaron Copland (Quiet City). Brahms's Concerto for Violin and Cello--heavy fare for a youth orchestra--is included to showcase special guests violinist Rachel Barton and cellist Wendy Warner, who got their start years ago as members of the Civic. Sunday, 7 PM, Petrillo Music Shell, Grant Park, Columbus and Jackson; 742-4763.
