Chicago Sound Map | Chicago Cultural Center, Claudia Cassidy Theater | Jazz | Chicago Reader
This is a past event.
When: Mon., Feb. 23, 7 p.m. 2009
This more or less annual mini-festival, started by Berlin-based multi-instrumentalist Boris Hauf (who now gets help from locals Michael Hartman, Dudley Bayne, and Brian Labycz), enters its third year with two concerts this week that present recent works by current or former Chicagoans. As the name of the festival suggests, it traffics in compositions that aren’t so much formal scores as maps suggesting different ways to organize and direct improvisers. The pieces by Olivia Block and Ernst Karel from last year’s installment (captured on the Chicago Sound Map CD released by Hartman’s Kuro Neko label) require the players to be fluent in various approaches to abstract sound, from experimental jazz and contemporary classical to lowercase electroacoustic improv. The ten-member ensemble for these shows includes the fest’s four organizers, and aside from Hauf the entire lineup is drawn from different segments of the local creative-music community; retired Roosevelt professor Don Malone conducts. Today’s concert features works by Don Malone and Adam Sonderberg. —Peter Margasak
