Chicago Psych Fest: Dark Fog, Plastic Crimewave Sound, Rabble Rabble, Verma, Red Plastic Buddha Agenda Soundboard Recommended

When: Sat., Jan. 21, 7 p.m. 2012
Price: $10
Bands: please don't over-psych the psych. If your pedal board—with its five delay units, three wah-wahs, and uber-exclusive theremin effect—commands more than an eighth of the stage, chances are your subterranean gurgles and cosmic bleep-bloops are just going to fry everyone's patience. Take a hint from local collective Verma, who reel in their Kraut-ish psych rock just before it gets to be too much. The band creates a cool tension with long, slow builds, gradually cranking up the aching waves of noise behind Whitney Johnson's echoing, distant vocals into laser-zap freak-outs. "Lady or the Tiger," from 2010's Salted Earth (Priority Male), epitomizes Verma's best qualities: it loops a chilling, dirgey, choirlike sway, occasionally accented by a screeching wreck of guitar, for six minutes, then explodes into an upbeat gallop at the very end. —Kevin Warwick This show is part of Third Eye Visions: Chicago Psych Fest 3, which began yesterday and ends tonight. Dark Fog headlines; Plastic Crimewave Sound, Rabble Rabble, Verma, and Red Plastic Buddha open.
