Fix Me

Chicago Palestine Film Festival

The Chicago Palestine Film Festival runs Friday, April 15, through Wednesday, April 27. Among the features screening this week are Samir Abdallah and Kheridine Mabrouk's documentary GAZA ON AIR, whose clandestine video footage captures the Israeli bombardment of Palestine in 2009 (Sat 4/16, 6 PM, and Mon 4/18, 8 PM); Raed Andoni's documentary FIX ME, in which the political situation is reflected in the filmmaker's chronic migraine headaches (Sat 4/16 and Thu 4/21, 8 PM); and Eyal Sivan's documentary JAFFA, THE ORANGE'S CLOCKWORK, about the politicization of the Jaffa orange (Sun 4/17, 5 PM).

The opening night movie is ZAHARA (Fri 4/15 and Wed 4/20, 8 PM). Albert Williams writes, "Palestinian director Mohammad Bakri offers an intimate view of Arab life in this 2009 documentary about his elderly aunt. Through interviews with the 80-year-old Zahara and her children and grandchildren, Bakri chronicles the woman's displacement to a Lebanese refugee camp during the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict, as well as her later experiences as wife of an organizer who worked to build a collectivist Arab community under Israeli governance. The film also explores the lives of Zahara's ten children and their numerous offspring, paying tribute to the courage, faith, and indomitable spirit of this peasant matriarch." For a complete schedule see  Gene Siskel Film Center, 164 N. State, 312-846-2800, $10, $7 for students, $5 for Film Center members. —J.R. Jones
