Chicago Dance Crash

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through May 1 2011
Price: $20-$25
Directed and choreographed by Christopher Courtney, who also stars as the Great Stone Face, The Trials of Busta Keaton is packed with juicy comedy, tragedy, and illusion as it explores the haunting correspondences between silent film and danced narrative, pratfalls and break-dance, the Hollywood lockstep and mechanized, alienated hip-hop. Current pop music, vintage commercials, and recorded snippets of interviews with celebrities such as Chris Farley and Brandon Lee provide a vivid aural backdrop. Gymnasts in sparkly, colorful costumes suggest the threat of talkies and Technicolor, while Courtney's Keaton expresses the sadness of an aging, outmoded cog in the showbiz machine. Both moving and entertaining, this coproduction with Culture Shock Chicago comes across as the most personal of CDC's pop-cult works. --Laura Molzahn
