Schubert loved to quote himself, and did so in many of his most famous pieces--the Wanderer Fantasy, the Rosamunde Quartet, and perhaps most famous of all, the Trout Quintet, which owes its existence to his short, wonderfully evocative lied "Die Forelle" ("The Trout"). Set in five movements and scored for piano, violin, viola, cello, and double bass, the quintet is one of Schubert's happiest works--its first movement, a sprightly allegro vivace, is followed by serene lyricism in the second and a sudden burst of energy in the third. After that comes the exceptional set of variations on the lied that make up the fourth movement; the drama and joy continue to the last note. This concert, which begins the Chicago Chamber Musicians' 20th season, also includes Schubert's warm, exquisitely delicate Octet in F Major. Featuring Larry Combs (clarinet), Dennis Michel (bassoon), Gail Williams (horn), Joseph Genualdi (violin), Jasmine Lin (violin), Rami Solomonow (viola), Katinka Kleijn (cello), Bradley Opland (double bass), and Deborah Sobol (piano). See also Monday. Sun 9/17, 7:30 PM, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, Northwestern University, 50 Arts Circle Dr., Evanston, 312-225-5226 or, $18-$36.
