In vignettes that are solidly linked by his emotional development, a Chicago cabdriver (Paul Dillon) is nearly overwhelmed by compassion for some of his fares; one moves him to become briefly involved in her life, another to consider the idea that sometimes there isn?t anything one person can do for another. As his nerves fray and his self-esteem dips, the character—who occasionally talks to himself—becomes increasingly idiosyncratic and convincing. Written by Will Kern, based on his play Hellcab, and directed by Mary Cybulski and John Tintori; with Laurie Metcalf, John C. Reilly, John Cusack, Julianne Moore, Reggie Hayes, and Gillian Anderson (1998).
